Tourette’s syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes tics, or involuntary movements or vocalizations. It is common among children and affects nearly 300,000 children in the U.S. today. TS symptoms usually start to occur between the ages of 5 and 7, although it can occur in kids as young as 3, and it becomes increasingly more noticeable by ages 8-12. By the time kids with Tourette’s reach adulthood, most have few to no signs of tics. Although tics are often outgrown, they can still be quite problematic for children. If your child is struggling with Tourette’s and you’re looking for a natural, drug-free, and effective solution, Franklin chiropractor Dr. Devan Arman can help.

What Causes Tourette’s Syndrome?

It is interesting to note that all children diagnosed with Tourette’s have tics, but not all tics are diagnosed as being caused by Tourette’s syndrome. The difference is that those children with TS are more likely to have multiple tics for longer periods of time, rather than just one tic. Most health professionals contribute TS to genetics and assume that they are simply inherited. However, studies have also shown that trauma or injury could lead to TS and tics. Specifically, trauma to the neck at a young age has been linked to Tourette’s syndrome. Studies have also shown that children with TS commonly have other conditions as well, such as OCD, ADHD, anxiety disorders, migraines, or learning disabilities. Medications for TS can reduce the occurrence and intensity of tics but don’t seek to treat the root cause of the TS or the other health concerns that could be contributing to the tics. Franklin chiropractor Dr. Devan Arman, on the other hand, treats the whole body.

How Does Chiropractic Help Those with TS?

Chiropractic care is a neurologically-based method for treating the entire body, which includes Tourette’s, a neurological disorder. The central nervous systems, composed of the brain and spinal cord, is responsible for relaying messages to the rest of the body. When a spinal misalignment is present, the nerve communication is interrupted, disrupting proper function of the body and leading to health issues such as TS. A gentle chiropractic adjustment from Dr. Devan Arman will remove these misalignments and restore proper nerve communication once again. Not only will it decrease tics, but it can also impact the other conditions that are often found in those with TS, treating the health of the whole person.

Has Chiropractic Helped Others?

Case studies have shown that chiropractic has helped many people with Tourette’s syndrome. A 15-year-old boy who suffered from TS as well as ADHD, migraines, behavioral and learning disorders, and OCD experienced significant improvements after being under regular chiropractic care. Over a 19-week period, his 21 total issues reduced down to just 2. His tics decreased drastically, his headaches were completely gone, and his overall health and wellness increased.
