Time and Repetition

A simple Google search can bring you hundreds of great quotes when it comes to the importance of time and repetition. From Aristotle to Muhammad Ali, the greats understood the value of repetition. It is no different when it comes to chiropractic. The majority of those seeking relief have suffered from a chronic illness, debilitating pain, or overall body discomfort for months, years, or even decades. In all of that time the body has compensated for the health concern by creating adhesions within joints of the spine. Those adhesions create nerve interference, and that nerve interference can bring about pain, muscle tension, digestion disorders, infertility, and a large amount of other dysfunction in the body’s systems. Upon removing that nerve interference, the body will want to return to that previously mentioned compensation since that’s what it is used to. This is where repetition comes in. Having those spinal segments adjusted regularly will gradually train the spine and muscles to return to their proper positions. This is known as neural plasticity, which is just a fancy way of saying the body’s ability to adapt and change.

The Forest Fire That Is Your Spine

While a glass of water can extinguish a small flame, that same glass of water isn’t going to do much against a raging forest fire. Just like when you start a new diet or go to the gym, it takes time for the body to change and adapt. The job of the chiropractic doctor is to make sure your spine adapts properly to maintain a proper curve and be free of nerve interference. In 2017, a study was conducted on the effects of consecutive adjustments on a population without access to healthcare services. In a group of 93 patients, more than 77% had back pain for more than a month before the study and 68% described it as constant. Three-quarters of the original 93 patients did not return to their primary care physicians. 82% reported a significant reduction in pain medication and 93% were satisfied with their treatments and reported an overall improvement in their health.

But What If I Don’t Want To?

In 2004, a study took place within a large military hospital. Those who decided to undergo chiropractic did not seek it on a regular basis and were not adjusted regularly. Incidentally, they noticed only minor changes. Anything worth doing is worth doing right. When it comes to receiving quality chiropractic care and improving your health, it takes time and repetition to start noticing real results.

How Does Neural Plasticity Factor In?

Neural plasticity is how your nervous system and other body systems change over time. When receiving regular chiropractic adjustments, the body begins to adapt to the proper form and structure. This includes restoring nerve signaling and the body’s ability to communicate with itself. Your body is an amazing, self-healing organism that is capable of incredible change when given the right opportunity. Chiropractic adjustments, when performed regularly, will help your spine establish proper alignment, leading to better communication between the brain and body’s functions, leading to more ideal function and more optimal health.
